The following are general guidelines for proper care and maintenance of the plants planted in your landscape recently:
JANUARY - Do any major pruning of trees. Water once every week to 10 days depending on the weather.
FEBRUARY - Put down pre-emergent in your lawn to prevent early spring weeds. Trim crape myrtles and grasses back if needed. Now is the time to do any heavy pruning of shrubs if necessary.
MARCH - Trim dead leaves out of perennials and other plants. Increase your watering to at least 2 times per week.
APRIL- Fertilize your lawn with 21-7-14 Scherz: Lawn Food. Fertilize all trees, shrubs and ground covers with Scherz: Green Up. Treat lawns with fungicide to prevent fungal growth. Also apply Merit for season-long grub control. Over-n-Out can be applied now for season-long fire ant control. Increase watering for all plants. Any plants 2 yrs old and younger should be watered at least 2 to 3 times per week. Begin regular maintenance pruning of shrubs and trimming of ground covers. Plant spring and summer blooming annuals now.
MAY - Pre-emergent could possibly be applied late May to prevent late spring and early summer weeds. Monitor your yard for signs of fungus and treat with fungicide if necessary.
JUNE - Fertilize your lawn with 21-7-14 Scherz: Lawn Food. Fertilize all trees, shrubs and ground covers with Scherz Green Up. Apply grub control late June through July if you did not apply Merit in the spring.
JULY - Apply grub control if not applied yet. Apply fungicide if necessary.
AUGUST - Continue watering new plants at least 2 to 3 times per week. Continue regular landscape pruning and trimming.
SEPTEMBER - Fertilize your lawn with 21-7-14 Scherz Lawn Food. Fertilize all trees, shrubs, and ground covers with Scherz Green Up. Apply pre-emergent to your lawns to prevent winter weeds. Continue watering and regular pruning, etc.
OCTOBER - Apply fertilizer if not done in September. Plant fall and winter flowering annuals and perennials now. This is the best time to plant almost all trees and shrubs. As long as temperatures decline you can scale back on the frequency of watering.
NOVEMBER - This is the best time to plant almost all trees and shrubs. Major pruning of trees can be done now.
DECEMBER - Can plant almost all trees and shrubs now. Monitor watering of landscape to ensure you are watering once every 7 to 10 days.
